Ombre’ Symphony

Sylvia Schaefer, Flying Parrot Quilts

Sylvia is a pattern designer, teacher, author and award-winning quilter. She has graduate and post graduate degrees in ecology and oceanography. It is a natural evolution that her quilt designs are often inspired by science and the natural world. Sylvia is a master at putting a fun modern twist on traditional quilt blocks using traditional methods and paper piecing.

This workshop will explore curved piecing with the Ombre’ Symphony project from Sylvia’s book Modern Scrap Quilts. This project is designed to help use up your scraps as you create a dramatic gradient with your fabrics. We will spend some time sorting through fabrics, then learn how to piece curves for this project featuring 3” finished blocks.
The fee for this workshop is $30 for members and $35 for non-members. The workshop fee includes the pattern and a copy of Sylvia’s book “Modern Scrap Quilts”. A $15 non-refundable deposit will be required to sign-up for this workshop; the deposit will apply to the workshop fee. Deposit payment can be made by cash or check to the Workshops Chairperson. Checks should be made out to Mountain Laurel Quilters Guild. Contact Pat Mahoney by e-mail at patriciafmahoney@gmail.com or text message to 770-294-2043.

I Love Words!!
with Laurel Rudolph

Laurel’s art springs to life through its bright colors, bold lettering, and inspirational intent with positivity stitched into every seam. Her journey as a textile artist began when a piece she created in elementary school was exhibited at the Milwaukee Art Museum. Laurel learned to sew by the age of 10, quickly mastering garment construction and channeling that skill into a dressmaking business. Her first attempt at quilting was, in her own words, a “disaster.” The arrival of grandchildren and grandnephews rekindled her love for quilting, while the mentorship of a long-arm quilter fanned the embers into a full flame. What began as modern quilting evolved to her signature style – the expressive freedom of art quilts.

Themes of encouragement and joy permeate Laurel’s work. Her art quilts are intended to elicit positive conversations. The bright colors and distinctive lettering make them visually striking and emotionally resonant. She is inspired by architecture, nature, and the innovative spirit of other quilt artists.Laurel’s commitment has garnered both accolades and attention: a Merit Award at the esteemed Lyndon House Arts Center’s 42nd Juried Exhibition in Athens, Georgia, a solo show at the Southeast Fiber Arts Alliance in Atlanta, Georgia, and numerous juried exhibitions at the Lyndon House Arts Center, among others. Her works have been spotlighted in major exhibitions, including the Atlanta Quilt Festival, Sacred Threads Exhibit in Indianapolis, and the Each/Other Exhibit at the Denver Art Museum. The publishing world has also taken note, with features in Art Quilting Studio Magazine and Uppercase Magazine.

This workshop will explore a variety of techniques for incorporating text into quilt projects.

The fee for this workshop is $20 for members and $25 for non-members. A $10 non-refundable deposit will be required to sign-up for this workshop; the deposit will apply to the workshop fee. Payment can be made by cash or check to the Workshops Chairperson. Checks should be made out to Mountain Laurel Quilters Guild.
